December festivities, Day of the Little Candles
One of the most anticipated and celebrated dates in Colombia is the Day of the Little Candles, a tradition that since 1854 serves to honor the Immaculate Virgin; this celebration is the official beginning of the Christmas holidays in the country.
With colorful candles and lanterns, families gather to welcome Christmas and dedicate some prayers to the Virgin; it's common to see in the streets of every corner of Colombia a beautiful light show.

Day of the Little Candles in Manizales, Caldas

The Night of Fire in Salamina-Caldas
The Night of Fire is one of the most important cultural events in the country; it is a night full of light and magic, for which the people of Salamina prepare most of the year.
With the intention that each inhabitant would light a candle for each sin, in the late 19th century the religious man José Joaquín Barco Ángel prompted an entire town to be filled with light, thus the tradition was born.
Every December 7th, the lights are turned on in Salamina, each block is decorated with arrangements and lights, candles and lanterns, electricity is suspended for a few hours, and with artistic performances, tribute is paid to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception.
During the night of December 7th, the Catholic community attends the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate to offer their prayers, and the procession commemorating this special date goes around the main park of Salamina as a prelude to the great homage that the faithful pay to the Virgin on her day.
Festival of Candles and Lanterns in Quimbaya - Quindío
During the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in honor of the Virgin Mary celebrated in Colombia, the Festival of Candles and Lanterns has been held in Quimbaya since 1981 on December 7th and 8th.
With fireworks, candles, and lanterns, and with the intention of commemorating the encounter between a messenger angel and the Virgin Mary as told by the Catholic religion, the people of this territory strive to create one of the most magical light displays in the region.

Day of the Little Candles in Corrales, Boyacá
More than half of the municipalities in Boyacá will cover their streets with thousands of light bulbs and nativity scenes starting this December 7th. Corrales, the City of Light of Colombia, waits all year for the holiday season with the intention of illuminating every corner of its streets, balconies, and large colonial-style houses.
Duitama, Tunja, Nobsa, Tibasosa, Monguí, and Santa Rosa de Viterbo are among the 79 municipalities that will decorate their streets with lights.
Day of the Little Candles at Jardines de la Aurora Cemetery, Cali
Starting at 4:30 in the afternoon with a Eucharist performed by the parish priest, where thanks are given to the Virgin of the Immaculate, the commemoration of the Day of the Little Candles begins.
Accompanied by a burst of light with candles, lanterns, and with poems and songs, the cemetery is adorned and shines through its decorated graves each night of December 7th.
This tradition began some years ago in Cali, adorning the graves with candles and lanterns at the Jardines de la Aurora Cemetery, located in the south of the city.
